What is ECE104?

If you own, operate, sell or service any goods vehicles over 7.5t or trailers over 3.5t then you need to know about this legislation.


The ECE104 Regulation is already recommended DfT best practice and, from July 2011, it will be a mandatory requirement for all newly registered HGV's operating in the UK.

There are suggestions that this regulation may still be made applicable to all HGV's, new or existing.

ECE104 provides guidelines for retro-reflective line or contour safety markings of heavy goods vehicles and their trailers throughout Europe and is already in force and mandatory in a number of countries.

Only approved reflective materials can be used and the markings must identify atleast 80% of the total width and total length of the vehicle.

The vehicle categories that will be effected are:

N2 - Vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of goods and having a maximum weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes but not exceeding 12 tonnes.

N3 - Vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of goods and having a maximum weight exceeding 12 tonnes.

O3 - Trailers with a maximum mass exceeding 3.5 tonnes but not exceeding 10 tonnes.

O4 - Trailers with a maximum mass exceeding 10 tonnes.
